Afro-Brazilian dance is unique and fun. It is an expressive and dynamic dance to hot, percussive Brazilian rhythms. Classes explore the exuberant street dances of today's great Brazilian festivals, such as Carnival. The roots of these new styles are found in the still vibrant dances developed by slaves brought to Brazil from Africa. The latter include dances enjoyed at parties, dances at celebrations in honour of the orixás (gods - often linked with the forces of nature), and dances reflecting day-to-day life and work.
The workshop will start with a gentle warm-up improving flexibility and balance. Next we will explore movement patterns and coordinations with a brief tour of dance styles found in Brazil. We will finish with a short choreographed piece structured to help you develop an Afro-Brazilian dance vocabulary.
